You know that feeling when you’re just starting to fall for someone, everything feels brighter, lighter, a bit unreal? There’s a word for that in Norwegian.
Today’s email is all about that feeling, plus a rare language you’ve probably never heard of.
Everyday Expressions
Language: Norwegian: “Forelsket”
Meaning: Forelsket describes the feeling of being in love, especially at the very beginning, when everything feels exciting and intense.
It’s not just “love” in a general sense.
It specifically refers to that early stage where emotions feel:
overwhelming
joyful
almost magical
In English, we might say:
“I’m falling in love.”
“I’m completely infatuated.”
Norwegian captures that entire emotional state in one word: forelsket.
Why it’s fascinating:
English separates ideas like “love”, “crush”, and “infatuation”.
But Norwegian has a precise word for that initial emotional spark, highlighting how languages can zoom in on very specific feelings.
Example:
Jeg er forelsket i deg.
Jeg er forelsket i deg.
“I’m in love with you.”
