Happy Thursday.
Somebody has a 500-day streak and still can't order a coffee.
That person is not lazy and not stupid. They've done something genuinely hard for 500 consecutive days. The problem is what those days were spent on.
Three reasons the plateau happens
1. The streak measures attendance, not ability
A streak is a retention mechanic. It exists to bring you back tomorrow, and it is extremely good at that.
But it rewards showing up, not improving. You can maintain a streak forever on material you already know, and the app will congratulate you every time. Nothing in the design distinguishes a day of real work from a day of tapping through the easy review.
2. Recognition is not production
Most app exercises are multiple choice, or matching, or picking words from a bank.
Every one of those gives you the answer somewhere on the screen. You're recognising, not retrieving. Recognition is a much weaker form of memory, it's the difference between "yes, that's her name" and actually producing the name from nothing.
Speaking requires retrieval from nothing. If your practice never asks for that, it never trains it.
3. The sentences aren't sentences you'd say
Isolated, translated sentences about owls and bread teach vocabulary in a vacuum. Real speech comes in chunks.
The whole phrases you deploy without assembling them word by word.
Learners who progress fastest tend to be the ones who learned "How much does this cost?" as one unit, rather than as five words plus a grammar rule.
What to look for instead
Free recall. Does anything ask you to produce language with no options on screen?
Spaced repetition you can't game. Real SRS gets harder as you get better.
Audio you must respond to, not just listen to.
Some route to a human. No app has solved unscripted conversation.
None of this means quit the app. It means treat it as vocabulary maintenance, which it does well, and get your speaking practice somewhere it can actually happen.
We went deeper on what separates an app that works from one that just keeps you busy.
Your turn
What's your longest streak, and be honest, did it translate into anything you could actually do?
Hit reply. No judgment, I've got a graveyard of abandoned streaks myself.
