Happy Thursday.

You were born a better listener than you are now.

Not metaphorically. Measurably.

What you could do at six months

At six months old, you could hear the difference between every pair of speech sounds used in every human language. Hindi retroflex consonants. Zulu clicks. Thai tones. All of it, effortlessly.

Researchers know this because babies show it: play a repeating sound, they get bored; change it to a different one, they perk up. At six months, babies perk up at contrasts their own parents cannot hear at all.

By twelve months, most of that is gone.

Why your brain threw it away

This isn't decay. It's optimisation, and it's called perceptual narrowing.

Your infant brain was running a statistical survey of the sounds around it. Sounds that mattered in your language got sharpened into categories. Sounds that never carried meaning got quietly merged.

English speakers have their own blind spots and simply don't notice them. Most can't hear the difference between the two Hindi sounds in dāl and ḍāl, which are as distinct to a Hindi speaker as "bat" and "pat" are to you.

The good news, which is real

The categories are dulled, not deleted. Adults retrain them all the time. What works:

  • Minimal pairs, over and over. Two words differing by exactly one sound, listened to back to back until the difference stops being invisible.

  • Exaggerated input first. Start with clear, slow recordings; move to natural speech once the category exists.

  • Produce as well as perceive. Making the sound yourself rebuilds the perceptual category faster than listening alone.

It takes weeks, not years. But you have to attack the specific contrast — general listening won't do it, because your brain has already decided that difference is noise.

If you want the full picture of how this happens, from babbling to fluency, we've written it up here.

Your turn

Is there a sound in your target language you genuinely cannot hear?

Hit reply and tell me which one, I'm collecting them for a future issue.
